I Have To X For Some Reason Cake is an exploitable meme format featuring a heart-shaped pink frosted cake that is edited to convey messages that generally follow the phrasal template "I Have To X For Some Reason." The image originated from a Flickr post in 2010, with internet users sharing edited versions of the meme from 2020 onward.

Origin

On February 15th, 2010, Flickr[1] user Debbie R posted the original image of the heart-shaped pink frosted cake with icing that read, "I Love You" (shown below). The post was captioned "birthday cake for mom."

The earliest known post containing an edited version of the cake was an October 23rd, 2020, post by X[2] (formerly Twitter) user @angievictoriah, with the cake reading, "I have to be the prettiest person at the grocery store for some reason." The post gathered over 2,600 likes in three years (seen below).

Spread

On October 30th, 2020, X[3] user @eggshellfriend posted a version of the meme that gathered over 39,000 likes in three years (seen below, left). On November 11th, Tumblr[4] user @cloverdosage posted a version of the meme that read, "I have to be person for some reason," gathering over 26,000 notes in three years (seen below, right).

A January 10th, 2022, version of the meme posted to X[5] by @parasocialyte gathered over 200,000 likes in a year (seen below, left), while a version of the meme posted to the Instagram[6] page @mylifeisupsetting on September 24th, 2023, gathered over 200,000 likes in a month (seen below, right).
