I Hate X | Turns Into X refers to image macro memes about characters who hate something specific, then eventually turn into the thing that they hate. The trope is frequently used among fandoms, particularly with anime and manga content.

Origin

On February 6th, 2018, Instagram user @animecells^[1] uploaded the first known use of the trope (which has since been deleted), with an image showing Character Eren from Attack on Titan says "I hate titans!" then becoming a Titan, followed by Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul saying "I hate ghouls!", then becoming a ghoul (shown below).

Spread

In the following years, the trope became popular, with many variations appearing. For example, on January 27th, 2021, Facebook page K-ON Burger Posting^[2] uploaded an edited version by adding Azusa Nakano from K-On!. The image received 452 reactions and 102 shares (shown below, left). On February 24th, 2021, Facebook user Lewis Miller Umlas^[3] uploaded an image along the same format with a Karen meme reference. The image received more than 5,900 reactions and 24,000 shares (shown below, right).
