I Hate When Slitherman Take Over My Thoughts continued Look At This Machete I Just Bought, refers to lyrics from the song Slitherman Vs Nephew by rapper RXKNephew which released in September 2023, inspiring a slew of TikTok videos in which creators humorously lip-dubbed the track, pairing their videos with text captions about insanity. Many also mistook the lyrics for "I hate when Slenderman take over my thoughts." The song predominantly went viral due to Instagram Live videos of RXKNephew playing the song for his Uber driver and also for random passengers on a flight with him. The memes led to the song's association with Meme Rap and Satirical Hip-Hop.

Origin

On September 7th, 2023, rapper RXKNephew released a track called "Slitherman Vs Nephew" on YouTube,^[1] gaining roughly 80,000 views and 8,600 likes in 13 days (shown below). At the video's 0:33-minute mark,^[2] RXKNephew starts his verse, "I hate when Slitherman take over my thoughts. Look at this machete I just bought. Six people in the house, they all dyin’. I put gasoline in their air fryer."

The song predominantly went viral on September 9th, 2023, when RXKNephew posted a video to his Instagram^[3] that was a recording of his then-recent Instagram Live in which he made his Uber driver play "Slitherman Vs Nephew" in the car, gaining roughly 8,400 likes in 11 days (shown below).

On September 10th, 2023, TikToker^[4] @rxknephewrxk reposted RXKNephew's Uber video, spreading it to the new platform and gaining roughly 1.4 million plays and 263,100 likes in 10 days (shown below, left). Also on September 10th, TikToker^[5] @oakwop posted a video with the song, writing, "rxk nephew most calm song," gaining roughly 200,900 plays and 14,900 likes in 10 days (shown below, right).

On September 11th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @rxknephewrxk posted another recording of an RXKNephew Instagram Live, showing the rapper playing the song out loud when boarding a plane, receiving roughly 315,700 plays and 56,900 likes in nine days (shown below, left). During the same timeframe, users started to use the TikTok sound^[7] of TikToker^[5] @oakwop's video, such as TikToker^[8] @invadergoth on September 13th, 2023, who made a joke about being bipolar, gaining roughly 202,100 plays and 44,800 likes in one week (shown below, right).

TikTokers^[9] on the app continued to amass engagement using the viral sound^[7] going into September 2023. In turn, some started to recreate RXKNephew's Instagram Lives, the first known being TikToker^[10] @gygdruhhg, who posted a video on September 14th in which he was playing "Slitherman Vs Nephew" for his Uber driver, garnering over 377,400 plays and 77,200 likes in six days (shown below).

During the same timeframe, RXKNephew started to post about and react to the trend on his own Instagram^[11] page.
