About

I Don't Understand This Meme and At This Point I'm Too Afraid to Ask refers to an exploitable photograph of Griffin McElroy holding a sign with the phrase, which is based on the Parks and Recreation quote used in the Afraid to Ask Andy image macro series.

Origin

The image comes from one of Griffin McElroy's Vine videos in which he holds up the sign in reference to the Yes – Roundabout / To Be Continued meme. The Vine has since been deleted, but McElroy tweeted a link to it on May 19th, 2016,[1] making that the likely post date (YouTube embed shown below).

Spread

According to Meme Documentation, [2] the first instance of the end frame being turned into an exploitable was posted by Tumblr user @ommanyte[3] on August 19th, 2017 referencing the Fancy Font meme on Tumblr. The post gained over 65,000 notes (shown below).

Over the course of the following months, Tumblr users turned the image into an exploitable in which they wrote various things they "don't understand" and are "too afraid to ask." For example, a post by user jedihighcouncil[4] changed "this meme" to read to "basic mathematics" and gained over 101,000 notes (shown below, left). A post by gothpussyindulgence which changed the phrase to "I don't know what I'm doing with my life and at this point I'm too afraid to try anything new" gained over 24,000 notes (shown below, right.
