Origin

On November 1st, 1994, Mariah Carey released the song "All I Want for Christmas Is You." The song became a modern Christmas classic, regularly returning to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts each holiday season.^[1]

On September 29th, 2020, Tiktoker @charleedahmilio posted an edited video of Carey performing the song, removing portions of the song so the track plays "I don't care about you." They added the chyron "No one: / Jeff Bezos:" expressing the opinion that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos does not care about other people. The post received more than 61,000 reactions, 1,700 shares and 1,200 comments (shown below).

Spread

Following the post, people began sharing videos of themselves lipsynching to the song. For example, on November 20th, 2020, TikToker @kirakosarin shared a variation of the video. The post received more than 450,000 reactions and 5,100 comments in less than two months (shown below, left). Days later, TikToker @elijahnelsonn shared a version that received more than 374,000 reactions and 11,000 comments in less than two months (shown below, right).

In less than six months, the sound has been used in more than 71,000 videos.^[2]
