I Do Not Vibe With This Universe is a catchphrase popularized through a series of Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon memes in which a Pokemon vanishes in front of another Pokemon after saying "I do not vibe with this universe," the other Pokemon responding, "What the fuck." The meme is based on a scene from the 2007 game Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and was first posted to Facebook in 2020, inspiring new variations and referential memes over the following years.
Origin
At the end of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, the protagonist character vanishes into thin air after they go back in time to fix the "bad future."[1] In October 2011, a video of the scene was uploaded to YouTube,[2] garnering over 350,000 views in 13 years (shown below).
On July 21st, 2020, Facebook[3] page Space Cowboy私愛 posted a meme using edited screenshots of the scene in which Eevee, before disappearing, says, "I do not vibe with this universe," Pikachu responding, "What the fuck," garnering over 1,400 reactions and 6,700 shares in four years (shown below). This is the earliest known account to post the meme
Spread
The meme and phrase "I do not vibe with this universe" gained viral spread, inspiring variations on the meme. On August 5th and 6th, 2020, X[4] user @OoCPokemon and Tumblr[5] user needsomething reposted the original meme, garnering over 18,000 likes on the former and 47,000 notes on the latter in four years. That day, iFunny[6] user Electivire posted a recreation of the meme, garnering over 39,000 smiles in the same span of time (shown below, left).
On the same day, a now-deleted Redditor posted a meme to /r/Giraffesdontexist[7] using a panel from the comic _ Pride of Baghdad_[8] of a giraffe's head being shot off, using the panel to represent the giraffe's head exploding after saying "I do not vibe with this universe," garnering over 5,200 upvotes in four years (shown below, right).
On August 31st, Redditor u/boredcrow24_ posted a video recreation of the meme to /r/MysteryDungeon,[9] garnering around 115 upvotes in four years. On November 27th, u/Nabird posted a Five Nights at Freddy's variation of the meme to /r/fivenightsatfreddys,[10] garnering over 5,000 upvotes in four years.
On November 4th, 2021, YouTuber[11] Gianni Matragrano posted a video voicing over the giraffe version of the meme, garnering over 1.2 million views in three years (shown below). On August 8th, 2023, TikToker[12] @lawsoflawrence posted an animation based on the meme, garnering over 140,000 views in seven months.
On January 2nd, 2024, u/MilitantPacifist13 posted an image macro using one of the panels from the original meme to /r/dankmemes,[13] garnering over 2,100 upvotes in two months (shown below). On March 19th, u/budderskeet posted the giraffe version of the meme to /r/ExplainTheJoke,[14] garnering over 3,300 upvotes in three days.
