About

I Do Not Stand With Russia refers to an infographic regarding the 2021-2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict that reads, "I Do Not Stand With Russia. I Do Not Stand With Ukraine. I Do Not Stand With NATO. I Do Not Stand With The U.N." represented through flag emojis of each nation or entity. It became an exploitable format in early 2022 when meme creators filled in a fourth sentence to note something that they do stand with in contrast. The original image was created in early 2022 on Instagram but was first remixed on Twitter.

Origin

On March 13th, 2022, the Instagram[1] account thefreethoughtproject posted an infographic regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict that escalated in early 2022. The image relayed over multiple lines of text that the creator did not stand with Russia, Ukraine, NATO or the U.N., using flag emojis to associate with each related keyword. The infographic ended with multiple people emojis of every race and gender, accompanied with text reading, "I Stand With The People Of Each Country Who Are Held Hostage By Countries That Start Wars, Destroy Economies And Subjugate Our Lives." The post (shown below) received roughly 33,300 likes over the course of nine days.

Spread

The infographic was reposted by multiple accounts going into mid-March 2022, like Instagram[2] account themindunleashedofficial on the 15th who received roughly 11,500 likes in one week.

On March 19th, 2022, Twitter[3] user xomputer posted the first known exploited version of the template, replacing the fourth line of text with, "I Stand In Line For Brisket At Rudy's 'Country Store' And Bar-B-Q," earning roughly 8,900 likes over the course of three days (shown below). Soon after, the meme was reposted to Instagram[4] by coincellpro4, who received roughly 1,300 likes in the same amount of time.

On March 20th, Instagram[5] account southafrican.communist posted a new iteration that showed a combination KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut flag, stating, "I Stand With This Flag." The meme (shown below, left) earned over 330 likes in two days and was later reposted by Instagram[6] account fakenewsnetwork on March 21st, where it earned roughly 3,000 likes in one day.

On March 21st, Instagram[7] account the_cumming_memesurrection posted a version that referenced the New Jersey-Philadelphia gas station chain Wawa, earning 1,300 likes in one day (shown below, right).

More iterations spread back to Twitter, like one posted on March 21st from Twitter[8] user troop_hater, who wrote, "I Stand With Big Tobacco," and used PNGs of Marlboro cigarette packs. The meme earned roughly 21,500 likes in one day, however, it was first posted to Instagram[9] by the same creator, where it earned roughly 1,700 likes in the same amount of time.
