About

I Didn't Mean To Send That is a phrase featured in a series of viral videos depicting a string of texts sent from one person to their significant other. The videos, shot from a first-person POV as if the viewer is the one texting, feature a person sending a series of apology texts to their partner before mistakenly sending an unrelated image, most often a Stonks meme.

Origin

On June 3rd, 2019, Redditor Renji posted a fake text meme on r/GoodFakeTexts,[1] featuring the text string as described in the About section of this page (shown below). The "accidentally sent" image, in this case, is the Stonks meme. The post received over 5,000 upvotes in 15 months.

On January 25th, 2020, TikToker bradyszuhaj[2] uploaded a voiced over version of this meme, garnering over 5 million views and 1.1 million likes in under 9 months (shown below). This post helped revive interest in the meme, introducing a video variation for the first time.

"Please don't do this. I seriously can't live without you. I didn't cheat on you. Stonks! I didn't mean to send that."

Spread

Following bradyszuhaj's upload, TikTokers took the original sound and applied it to their own fake text strings, often preceding the texts with a picture of their crying face. On March 4th, TikToker luvvvboobear696969[3] uploaded a version of the meme set to bradyszuhaj's sound, featuring an image of herself crying before the text string begins (shown below, left). The video garnered over 3.7 million views in 7 months. This video featuring luvvvboobear696969's face is regularly used in subsequent versions of the meme. On April 17th, TikToker tarnold7[4] uploaded a version of the meme featuring their face, receiving over 3.8 million views in 6 months (shown below, right). The meme continued to spread around TikTok, with over 9,000 videos using bradyszuhaj's sound by October of 2020.

On September 15th, 2020, meme creator Nitro.iF[5] posted a version of the meme to their Instagram and YouTube page, using luvvvboobear696969's TikTok as the source video but replacing the stonks image with another image (shown below, left). The video garnered over 859 thousand views in 20 days. This raised interest in the format across social media, inspiring more versions where the stonks meme is replaced by something else. Cloudy.exe[6] uploaded a variation on the format on September 17th, featuring a GIF replacing the usual Stonks image (shown below, right). This video garnered over 11 thousand views in 18 days (shown below, right).

On September 21st, YouTuber Dotsinlines uploaded a compilation of these memes, all with new images or videos in place of the Stonks image (shown below). The video garnered over 5,000 views in 14 days.
