"I Didn't Know There Was This Much Green in the Whole Galaxy" is a remix meme that refers to a line of dialogue delivered by the character Rey in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the film, Rey is reacting to the sight of lush, green forests for the first time in her life. Online, users have recut the scene and replaced what Rey sees in the film with jokes on the various meanings of the word "green."

Origin

The phrase comes from a scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in which Rey, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Finn travel to the forest planet of Takodana. Upon seeing the planet's vast green landscape, Rey, a native of the desert planet Jakku, says, "I didn't know there was so much green in the whole galaxy."

On March 23rd, 2017, YouTuber HexMem uploaded a version of the clip that replaced the CGI planet from the film with blank green background, appearing to look like a green screen. Thus, the parody commented on the use of green screen effects in the films as well as created a template for other users.

HexMem's video received more than 350,000 views. Three days later, on March 26th, 2017, YouTuber shonkywonkydonkey uploaded another video, this time replacing the green screen with a clip of rapper Snoop Dogg holding two large bags of marijuana. The video received more than 60,000 views.

The original video by HexMem appeared on the website Boing Boing on March 27th, 2017 and received 27 comments.^[1]

On April 3rd, 2017, YouTuber Dolan Dark uploaded a variation that received more than 62,000 views.
