I Didn't Expect the Third Reich to Show Up refers to a memorable scene from anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in which character Joseph Joestar and his companions unexpectedly encounter Nazi Germany forces during their journey. A still image from the scene, paired with a fabricated quote, was circulated online as an image macro and an exploitable.

Origin

On February 8th, 2013, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure episode "Von Stroheim's Revenge" premiered in Japan.[1] In one scene of the episode, set in 1939, the main protagonist Joseph Joestar and his companions encounter a group of German soldiers during their journey over the Swiss-Italian border.

In the official translated version of the episode, none of the characters pronounces the phrase "I didn't expect the Third Reich to show up."[9]

The exact origin of the macro is unknown. On January 16th, 2014, Funnyjunk user heroicvenom posted the earliest known instance of the macro as a response to a post by another user.[2] On May 28th, 2014, the macro in a thread on /co/ board.[3] In the following weeks, the image appeared in more posts in /vr/,[4] /co/,[5] /a/[6] and other 4chan boards.

In the following years, the macro gained popularity on Reddit, Tumblr and other websites. For example, on November 28th, 2018, Tumblr user weirdsexpervert used the macro as an image reaction in a post that gained over 20,000 likes and reblogs in five months (shown below, left).[7] Another version of the meme, posted by Redditor CynicTheCritic on January 16th, 2019, gained over 25,100 upvotes in /r/dankmemes subreddit (shown below, right).[8]
