I Depend On You is an art piece by X / Twitter artist @sometimes317 depicting a simplistic blue person and yellow person hugging, their faces overlapping in the middle to make green. The art was posted on X in late November 2024 and became the subject of redraws in December a month later. The art piece also became the subject of online discourse, with some criticizing the perceived level of skill on display in the art and calling it bad, while many others came to its defense.

Origin

On November 27th, 2024, X[1] user @sometimes317 posted a piece of art depicting a yellow figure with blue eyes hugging a blue figure with yellow eyes over an orange background, their faces overlapping in the middle and creating a shade of green. The post reads, "I depend on you." The post garnered over 78,000 likes and 15,000 reposts in a month.

In early December 2024, people began redrawing the artwork and created additional art based on the illustration. One of the earliest known examples was posted on December 7th by X[2] user @Caprisu37180026, garnering over 3,400 likes in three weeks.

Spread

On December 24th, 2024, X[3] user @miloverinc posted a graphic analyzing the artwork and what makes it meaningful to them, garnering over 28,000 likes in three days.

Some X users criticized the art that month for displaying a perceived lack of technical skill. For example, on December 25th, 2024, X[4] user @QuantumV3 quote-reposted it, writing, "why did people even like this I drew shit like that in ms paint when I was 8," garnering around 640 likes in two days.

Later that day, the same X[5] user quote-reposted a user defending the art in his comments, sharing a much worse drawing and writing, "my new amazing art I want ten billion likes," garnering over 2,800 likes in two days.

The criticism arguably had a Streisand Effect on the artwork, with numerous examples of redraws being posted online in the following days. On December 26th, X[6] user @cookiecat009 posted a redraw of the art that gained over 112,000 likes in a day.

On the same day, X[7] user @zxidart posted a defense for the art, writing, "art isn't just overcomplex hyperrealism, there is thought behind this piece that allows people connect and come with their own interpretations, which is why people find art fascinating," garnering over 65,000 likes in a day.

Also on December 26th, 2024, X[8] user @kataboozOFCL posted a piece of art inspired by the original showing the blue character with green on their back, titling the art, "I still depend on you," garnering over 68,000 likes in a day.
