"I Came Here To Laugh At You" is a memorable quote from the Japanese anime television series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam typically used as a mocking insult in reaction image of smugly smiling characters in sunglasses.

Origin

In the anime series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, which aired from 1985 to 1986, the character Amuro Ray asks Char Aznable^[8] to explain why he has arrived, to which he responds that he came to “laugh at” him (shown below).

Amuro Ray: "Why are you here?"
Char Aznable: "I came to laugh at you! Is that what you were expecting me to say?"

On November 22nd, 2010, a captured image of Aznable with the subtitle "I came here to laugh at you" was posted to the /tg/ (Traditional Games) board on 4chan (shown below).^[1]

Spread

On November 13th, 2011, the screenshot of the scene was submitted in a thread about the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn within the /m/ (Mecha) board on 4chan.^[9] On September 28th, the screen capture was posted in a "that feel" thread about the Gundam fandom in on 4chan's /a/ (anime and manga) board.

From 2011 to 2013, the image continued to be used as a reaction image on the /a/,^[2] /m/ (Mecha)^[3] and /tg/ ^[4] boards. On May 12th, 2013, a screenshot of the character Kotori Itsuka from the anime series Date A Live with the caption "I came here to laugh at you" (shown below, left) was posted in a thread on the /vp/ (Pokemon) board on 4chan. On December 13th, a page for a shirt with the phrase "I came here to laugh at you" (shown below, right) was launched on the custom apparel site Zazzle.^[10]
