I Am Steve refers to a scene from A Minecraft Movie in which the camera zooms in on Jack Black's face and he announces, "I am Steve," revealing himself to be the protagonist of Minecraft, named Steve. The scene appeared in the film's teaser trailer released in early September 2024 and quickly became the subject of reactions and memes online, including photoshops, edits and other memetic content, with some finding it to be corny and cringeworthy.

Origin

On September 4th, 2024, the first teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie was released online, including on YouTube^[1] and X / Twitter,^[2] garnering over 14 million views on the former and 128,000 likes on the latter in a day. At the 00:40-second mark, Jack Black appears from a burst of fire. One of the film's protagonists asks who he is. The camera zooms in on Jack Black and he says, "I am Steve."

The "I am Steve" scene became the subject of memes and reactions online shortly after the trailer's release on September 4th, 2024. For example, that day, X^[3] user @Triki_Tr0y posted an edit of the scene in which Jack Black opens his mouth to say the line and instead screams, writing, "Why did Jack Black do that???" garnering over 27,000 likes in a day.

About three hours later, X^[4] user @_DJNinja posted a photoshop of the scene in which Jack Black's Steve has been edited to look like a Roblox character, captioned, "I am noob," garnering over 46,000 likes in a day.

Also on September 4th, 2024, TikToker^[5] @vetzmovies posted a video in which he ranks the top five movie quotes of all time, placing "I am Steve" in all five slots, garnering over 1.1 million views in a day. YouTuber^[6] David Tamburro posted a Source Filmmaker animation referencing the scene, garnering over 8,000 views in the same span of time.

Later on September 4th, X^[7] user @GoneSnail posted an edit of the scene in which Jack Black has been altered to resemble Steven Universe, garnering over 66,000 likes in a day.

Several hours later, X^[8] user @BraylinIsCool posted an edit combining the scene with the "I Am Placing Blocks and Shit" meme, garnering over 11,000 likes in a day.
