About

How to Flip the Bird is an animation series featuring various Miku Miku Dance characters (MMD) demonstrating how to perform a middle finger hand gesture to a character in front of them, expressing three different reactions of discontent.

Origin

On June 8th 2013, Nico Nico Douga user 如月 銃駆 (Juke Kisaragi) uploaded a video titled "人を怒らせるMMD" ("How to Flip The Bird MMD" in English). In the first part of the video, two Vocaloid characters are talking to each other in Japanese, one seemingly trying to interrupt the other as she tries to speak to her. The other half of the video consists of an instructional sequence in which the Vocaloid character Miku Hastune gives the middle finger in three different ways, from the dullest to the most expressive.

Spread

On June 12th, 2013, The first upload on YouTube of a scene reusing the motion capture from the last part of the Nico Nico Douga video was submitted by PALMTREExD:

This video wasn't as much noticed by the MMD community on Youtube with less then 1 400 views, though. It was actually on June 25th, 2013, that the scene would catch attention when Youtuber Zellgadissiv uploaded his own version of the middle finger video, gathering over 1 million views in the next year (shown below).

In the description, the same way PALMTREExD linked to it, Zellgadissiv revealed that the motion capture used in the animation had been shared by its creator Juke Kisaragi on the site BowlRoll.[1] Other YouTubers subsequently uploaded their own MMD-inspired videos featuring various characters "flipping the bird" (shown below).
