How Fake X Look When Real Y Come At Them refers to a recaptioned exploitable with Impact font that originally read How Fake Gay Girls Look When Real Lesbians Come At Them and showed actresses LisaRaye McCoy and Chrystale Wilson in the 1998 movie The Players Club. It is currently unknown who made the original meme, however, the format became viral in the 2020s on both Instagram and Twitter. The captions most often portrayed one person who was superior to the other, coming up behind them and calling them out for being inauthentic.

Origin

On April 8th, 1998, The Players Club was released in American theaters.^[1] In one scene of the movie, the characters Ronnie (played by Chrystale Wilson) and Diamond (played by LisaRaye McCoy) are in the strip club's dressing room before Diamond's first day. Ronnie goes behind Diamond in one moment and brushes her fingernails across Diamond's chest (YouTube^[2] upload shown below).

At some point before 2018, a currently unknown meme creator made a meme with a screenshot from the scene, writing in a top and bottom Impact font caption, "How fake gay girls look when real lesbians come at them" (shown below). Currently, the first-known posting of the meme was on February 1st, 2018 by Twitter^[3] user @TTBMJ. The first known viral posting was on January 14th, 2020, by Instagram^[4] user @patiasfantasyworld, gaining roughly 4,100 likes in three years.

Spread

Going into the 2020s, the meme gained viral spread and variations, predominantly starting in the year 2022. For instance, on January 24th, 2022, Twitter^[5] user @petworthot tweeted a version about "Twitter Bi Men" when "women" approached them, gaining over 830 likes in one year (shown below, left). On December 1st, 2022, Twitter^[6] user @undertabIe posted one about "male haters" and "misandrist lesbians," gaining roughly 7,400 likes in six months (shown below, right).

The format became increasingly viral in early 2023. For instance, on March 4th, 2023, Twitter^[7] user @blanchehudsons tweeted a version about "older women enjoyers," gaining roughly 2,100 likes in three months (shown below).

Viral iterations persisted on both Instagram^[8] and Twitter^[9] going into 2023.
