About
"How Dare You Stand Where He Stood" is a quote from the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It is used as a reaction image to express disappointment and anger at a person or thing replacing someone or something beloved.
Origin
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Harry Potter confronts Snape in the Great Hall of Hogwarts and says the line.
In the previous film, Snape had killed Dumbledore. In the seventh and eighth films, he has taken the position of Headmaster at Hogwarts. At the end of the eighth film, Harry confronts Snape and says "How dare you stand where he stood," referring to Snape in Dumbledore's place.
Spread
The moment spread online as a reaction image to express righteous anger at an unwanted replacement. Known early examples of the meme include a Funnyjunk[1] post dated August 30th, 2012, which pairs the image with Wallace from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire welcoming the player to the Hall of Fame at the end of the game instead of Professor Oak (shown below, left). Another example posted to Reddit[2] on September 15th, 2013 pairing the image with Joe on Blue's Clues, the replacement for Steve, gained over 1,600 points (shown below, right).
More recent examples of the parody include a September 1st, 2018 post of a "Halloween City" banner over a "Party City" sign that gained over 1,400 points on /r/memes (shown below, left). An August 24th post on /r/dankmemes about Robbie Rotten gained over 1,000 points (shown below, right).
