About
How Close Are You To X Maps refers to a map and geography-based TikTok trend that shows how close one lives to different celebrities, rappers and social media influencers. The maps are color-coordinated by U.S. state or country and show which U.S. state or country the famous person lives in. "How Close Are You To X" maps trended on in late 2022, referencing people such as iShowSpeed, Andrew Tate and Britt Barbie, among others.
Origin
TikTok map and geography pages started appearing on the platform in mid-2022 in which creators presented statistics and their opinions on different countries using color-coding and emojis over drawn-in maps of Europe and America. For instance, one of the first-known pages was TikToker[1] mapofgeography who ranked European countries by their coat of arms, gaining roughly 36,300 plays and 1,100 likes in six months (shown below, left). On July 21st, 2022, TikToker[2] vdacu posted a "How far away are you from Wyoming?" map, gaining roughly 520,300 plays and 37,000 likes in four months and being the first known TikToker to create a map of such nature on the platform (shown below, right).
Spread
Going into late 2022, more map-based TikTokers started appearing on the platform. For instance, on August 20th, 2022, TikToker[3] polskie.mapy0 posted a video that rated European countries using opinion-based states and Wojak characters, gaining roughly 2.3 million plays and 229,500 likes in three months (shown below, left). The style of TikToker polskie.mapy0's precursor map videos inspired the aesthetics of later "How Close Are You To X" videos (example shown below, right).
On September 6th, 2022, TikToker[5] ohio_the.state posted a map video showing a "How Close Are You To Andrew Tate Right Now?" map, gaining roughly 63,300 plays and 1,300 likes in two months and being one of the first known maps based on an influencer's location (shown below, left). TikToker[6] ohio_the.state went viral a day later, on September 7th, 2022, when they posted an iShowSpeed iteration, gaining roughly 2.3 million plays and 130,300 likes in two months (shown below, right).
More iterations were posted by different map creators on the platform going into November 2022. For instance, on October 24th, 2022, TikToker[7] shrekisbest.69 posted a MrBeast version, gaining roughly 3 million plays and 107,400 likes in four weeks despite incorrectly listing MrBeast's homes state as South Carolina and not North Carolina (shown below, left). On October 28th, 2022, TikToker[8] thatonemapacc posted a map video that listed Britt Barbie as being from Missouri, gaining roughly 6.2 million plays and 459,500 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).
