About
How About A Nice Big Cup of Shut the Fuck Up is a catchphrase derived from a meme and novelty graphic showing a soldier smiling and holding up a mug alongside the caption, "How about a nice big cup of shut the fuck up. Think before you open your stupid mouth!" The "nice big cup" meme is based on a World War II rationing poster, using the same soldier graphic. In 2023, an audio of someone reading the "nice big cup" caption went viral on TikTok, inspiring lip dub memes. In February 2026, a video of a student quoting the phrase went viral, inspiring edits.
Origin
The "nice big cup of shut the fuck up" meme is based on a World War II era poster encouraging rationing of food and resources. The original poster, which dates back to 1943, shows a soldier smiling with a mug next to the caption, "Do with less – so they'll have enough! Rationing gives you your fair share."[1]
It is unclear who made the "nice big cup" edit of the poster, but according to a reverse-image search on TinEye,[8] various edits of the image began appearing online as early as February 5th, 2008, though none of the sites or pages remain active as of 2026.
On May 9th, 2013, WordPress[2] user David posted one such edit as part of an article titled, "Tell your brain to have a nice cup of STFU!"
On May 10th, 2022, YouTuber[3] VoicesByZane posted a video consisting of another edit of the poster, made by an unknown individual, voicing over the caption in a Midwestern accent, garnering over 37,000 views in four years.
