Hot Girl Summer refers to the Summer of 2019 when American rapper Megan Thee Stallion released her album Fever. Many fans began using the term Hot Girl Summer when posting selfies due to Megan Thee Stallions calling herself the hot girl.
Origin
On May 15th, 2019, Megan Thee Stallion[1] posted her album art for Fever to Twitter naming herself a 'hot girl" (shown below). The tweet gained over 18,600 likes and 5,400 retweets in two months.
Spread
On May 18th, 2019, Twitter user @sweetliketeaaa[2] posted a selfie captioning it "I heard it’s a hot girl summer 👀" (show below, left). The tweet gained over 342 likes in two months. Many more Twitter users began posting selfies like @Ohlawditsmeshaa[3] who captioned her photos, "Meg said it’s a hot girl summer. So guess what I’m doing all summer long? Cuttin’ up 😈" (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 300 likes in two months.
On June 25th, The Root posted an interview with Megan Thee Stallion to YouTube and asked her what it means to have a Hot Girl Summer (shown below). The video gained over 2,700 views in a week.

On August 8th, 2019, Megan Thee Stallion uploaded "Hot Girl Summer ft. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign" to YouTube (shown below). The track gained over one million views and 129,000 likes in a day.
On August 9th, 2019, Megan Thee Stallion[4] announced that her new single titled "Hot Girl Summer" was out now (shown below). The tweet gained over 14,100 retweets and 37,800 likes that day.
Twitter users responded with excitement on Twitter. Twitter user @twaimz[5] tweeted, "IM SHAKING ASS AT CHEESECAKE FACTORY" (show below, left). The tweet garnered over 2,000 likes that day.
