About

Hot Abraham Lincoln Statue refers to a statue of a shirtless Abraham Lincoln in the Los Angeles federal courthouse. Once the statue was publicized on Twitter in a tweet by user @MuseZack in February of 2019, many users made jokes about the statue in the form of puns and jokes.

Origin

The statue was created by James L. Hansen and installed in the Los Angeles federal courthouse in 1939.[2]

On February 20th, 2019, Twitter user @MuseZack[1] posted an image of the statue, writing "Reminder that the Los Angeles federal courthouse has a statue of Abraham Lincoln where he's a shirtless young stud suggestively tugging at his waistband like a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model." The tweet gained over 10,000 retweets and 48,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

In the ensuing thread, Twitter users began posting puns and jokes about the statue. User @NerdPyle tweeted "Honest Abs," a pun on Lincoln's nickname "Honest Abe," gaining over 270 retweets and 6,300 likes (shown below, left). User @AlecMacGillis tweeted "The Gettysburg Undress," a pun on Lincoln's famous "Gettysburg Address" speech (shown below, right).

Twitter user @PKtje posted results to a google search for fanfiction about the statue, writing they'd found "a metric imperial fuckton of fanfiction about that shirtless Lincoln statue."[3] The jokes were covered by Twitter Moments,[4] BoingBoing,[5] and Time.[6]
