About

Horse in the Rain refers to an image macro of a horse standing in the rain, looking lonely. The original photograph was taken in 2012 by photographer Matt Hansen. It later became a GIF on Tumblr and then a reaction image in early 2023 on Twitter, used similarly to the Sitting Wolf image and other Staring Animal images.

Origin

On February 24th, 2012, wildlife photographer Matt Hansen uploaded a photo to Flickr[1] that he titled, "The Rain Will Fall," which showed a wild horse standing in the rain, looking into the camera (shown below).

Sometime before 2014, the image was made into a GIF by since-deleted Tumblr[2] user gildadeiladri (shown below, left). A variation of the GIF reading, "i just feel so lonely," was used in a Buzzfeed[3] article on March 6th, 2014, which linked gildadeiladri beneath the GIF (shown below, right).

Tumblr[2] user gildadeiladri's original GIF was later reposted by Tumblr[3] user diariodeunaenfermacronica on September 11th, 2015, earning over 380 notes in eight years. On May 18th, 2021, the horse image was used by Tumblr[4] user les-amis-against-napoleon in a memetic context, gaining over 170 notes in two years.

The image of the horse in the rain received notable meme attention in early 2023, when on January 7th, 2023, Instagram[5] user @zogzate posted a The Opps Forced Him meme with the horse, captioning it, "when the opps give you a MEALY apple" (shown below, left). It's currently unknown who the meme's original creator is, however, @zogzate is its first discovered upload. On February 23rd, 2023, Tumblr[6] user greathoughtsphilosopy posted a square-cropped and lower-quality version of the photo, gaining roughly 12,900 notes in two months (shown below, right).

In April, the square-cropped, low-quality version of the horse spread on Twitter[7] via viral replies, functioning as a reaction image.
