About
Hood Christmas Carols, also known as Ghetto Christmas Carols, refers to a TikTok trend in which Black creators sing "hood" remixes of famous Christmas carols and songs, replacing words with AAVE and other slang terms. The trend was started by TikToker Lil Kari (@lilkari_36) in 2021. However, the trend became commonplace in December 2023 when Lil Kari posted a remix of "Let It Snow" called "Let Her Hoe," inspiring many to share their own hood "Let It Snow" remixes.
Origin
On December 16th, 2021, TikToker[1] @lilkari_36 posted a "hood" Christmas carol showing himself and two friends sitting in a car, singing a remix of "Deck The Halls With Boughs Of Holly," gaining roughly 1.6 million plays and 187,400 likes in two years (shown below).
Spread
After his 2021 video went viral, TikToker @lilkari_36 added "Part 2" and "Part 3" of his Hood Christmas Carols series. Part 2 was uploaded to TikTok[2] on December 20th, 2021, gaining roughly 7.5 million plays and 1.1 million likes in two years (shown below, left).
On December 24th, 2021, he then uploaded "Part 3" to TikTok,[3] this time being a remix of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." The video received roughly 967,800 plays and 118,900 likes in two years (shown below, right).
"Let Her Hoe" / "Let It Snow" Hood Versions
The TikToker posted similar videos in December 2022 that gained virality. However, it wasn't until December 2023 that other TikTokers picked up on the trend en masse, creating their own Hood Christmas Carols. The resurgence was caused by a video TikToker[4] @lilkari_36 posted on December 3rd, 2023, that was a remix of "Let It Snow" called "Let Her Hoe," gaining over 19 million plays and 3 million likes in five days (shown below).
The video inspired numerous duets and stitches from others on the app, such as TikToker[5] @jayytoop on December 4th, 2023, who lip-dubbed the song, gaining roughly 534,600 plays and 80,800 likes in four days (shown below, left).
On December 5th, TikToker[6] @ohitsdannyb posted a similar video with the "Let Her Hoe" sound, receiving roughly 470,600 plays and 107,300 likes in three days (shown below, right).
Soon after, others on the app started to create their own Hood Christmas Carols. For instance, on December 6th, 2023, TikToker[7] @princesstyliaa posted her own remix of "Let It Snow," earning over 3.6 million plays and 1 million likes in two days (shown below).
