Homelander's "It Was Perfect" refers to a clip from the satirical superhero series The Boys in which the character Homelander (played by Antony Starr) tells a false story about his childhood during an interview, remembering a moment that was "perfect." Starting in July 2022, the clip achieved virality as a reaction meme and caption format on TikTok and X / Twitter, often being used to express nostalgia. The scene has also been used as a part of the Rating Every X format.
Origin
On July 26th, 2019, episode six "The Innocents" of season one of the satirical superhero television series The Boys premiered in the United States.[1] In the episode, Homelander gives an interview, during which he tells a false childhood story about his mother baking him a birthday cake in the shape of a baseball diamond and comments that it was "perfect down to the last, minute details."
On July 28th, 2022, YouTube[2] user Guevara uploaded the clip to YouTube, where it received over one million views in two years (shown below).
And … Oh, I got to tell you, it was perfect. Perfect! Everything, down to the last, minute details.
Spread
On July 12th, 2022, X[3] / Twitter user @juliusssiezure made the earliest discovered social media post that used the scene as a reaction, captioning the clip, "me when someone asks how was the episode 8 of better call saul." The post (shown below) received over 70 reposts and 360 likes in two years.
On July 25th, 2022, the X[4] account homelander reactions & clips (@homelanderbot) archived the reaction video, with the post garnering over 40 reposts and 240 likes in two years. On August 12th, TikTok[5] user @cinematix_ posted an edit in which the clip was followed by a montage of popular 2000s video games, with the post garnering over 102,000 views and 5,200 likes in two years (shown below, left).
The sound was used in multiple similar nostalgia edits in the following months. For example, on November 20th, TikTok[6] user @thecocktv posted an edit that received over 128,500 views and 18,900 likes in one year (shown below, right).
Starting in late August 2022, the video saw use as a part of the Rating Every X meme format alongside several other reaction clips.
The It Was Perfect clip maintained popularity online through 2022 and 2023, being used as a reaction and caption format on TikTok and X, among other platforms.
