About

Hollywood Is Done For, sometimes called AI-Generated Hollywood, refers to discussions and memes about a series of viral AI-generated videos meant to replicate and replace Hollywood movies and scenes. The videos were shared by AI enthusiasts on Twitter with the belief that artificial intelligence had progressed enough to threaten the Hollywood film industry, and the posts received mixed reactions from people who supported the belief and from people who did not think the footage was remarkable. Two videos that went viral in April and May 2023 include an AI-remake of The Great Gatsby and an AI-made video featuring Star Wars characters depicted in the style of director Wes Anderson.

Origin

In late April 2023, various AI enthusiasts on Twitter began to discuss the possible future impacts AI text-to-video technology may have on the Hollywood film industry.[1][2]

On April 29th, 2023, Twitter[3] user @realchasecurtis reposted a video created by @ChristianF369[4] using Gen 2 RunwayML text-to-video technology.[5] The video was an AI-generated recreation or parody of The Great Gatsby in the style of filmmaker Bax Luhrmann, titled, "The Great Catspy." The post gathered over 4.3 million views in two days (seen below).

On April 30th, various people began to respond to the video and @realchasecurtis's hypothesis that the video presents a real threat to the Hollywood film industry. That same day, Twitter[6] user @9_volt_ posted a quote tweet that read "I believe you man," gathering over 65,000 likes in a day (seen below, left). Also that day, Twitter[7] user @OrdinaryGamers posted a tweet in support of the video, saying, "Man this looks like ass but like a month ago we saw Will Smith devouring spaghetti. / Insane levels of development since then," gathering over 26,000 likes in a day (seen below, right).

That same day, Twitter[11] user @TomZohar posted two other frames from the video that pointed towards the AI Can't Draw Hands meme, gathering over 1,000 likes in a similar timeframe (seen below, right).
