#HobbyLobbyChallenge refers to a photo fad in which photographers take pictures of their models amidst merchandise in a Hobby Lobby store, making it appear as though the model is on a beautiful set.

Origin

On January 26th, 2018, Twitter user and photographer @_kelseymaggart[1] posted several tweets featuring photos she'd taken of models inside a Hobby Lobby. Her first tweet gained over 15,000 retweets and 104,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

The idea started becoming a trend shortly after @_kelseymaggart's tweets were posted. On February 1st, user @jaytee931 uploaded images in the style of the challenge, crediting @_kelseymaggart for the idea (shown below, left). On February 7th, user @wtfmarkitos posted examples, gaining over 240 retweets and 2,400 likes (shown below, right).



Other, similar locations to Hobby Lobby were used for the challenge. For example, user @giannahorvath_ uploaded pictures from a Dollar Tree, gaining 202 retweets and over 2,200 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @ariannamz13 tweeted photos from a Michael's, gaining 64 retweets and over 1,000 likes (shown below, right). The challenge was covered by media outlets including Select All,[2] Buzzfeed,[3] and MSN,[4] the lattermost of which reported that employees of the stores hated the challenge.
