Hitler Playing Xbox 360 is an edited image of Nazi leader Adolf Hiter holding an Xbox 360 controller.
Origin
The original photograph of Hitler was taken by Hugo Jaeger between 1936 and 1939 (shown below, left). The photos are currently owned by Time Life. On February 21st, 2009, the photograph was uploaded to the website of Holocaust denier and discredited historian David Irving.[1][2]
The earliest available variation of an edited variation of the image was posted by Redditor [3] ConnorFin22 on May 5th, 2013 (shown below, right).
Spread
That year, MemeCenter user phil.flash.9 used the image as the reaction to a joke about a World War II video game (shown below, left). They captioned the photograph of Hitler, "This is fun! You can actually win the war."
The following year, on July 8th, 2014, Twitter [4] user @incicaps tweeted the photo. The post recevied more than 2,300 likes and 2,200 retweets in five years (shown below, center).
On June 30th, 2018, the image was published to the /r/fakehistoryporn subreddit. The Redditor,[5] who has since deleted their account, titled the thread "Hitler taking some time off to play fortnight (1941, colourised)." The post received more than 10,000 points (95% upvoted) and 175 comments (shown below, right).
On August 7th, 2019, Redditor[6] Swat-Man posted the image in response to claims that video games cause violence and the #VideoGamesAreNotToBlame movement. The post received more than 20,000 points (97% upvoted) and 95 comments in two days (shown below).
