Hit Those Notes

About

Hit Those Notes refers to a style of remix popular on YouTube in which popular songs are edited such that various notes in the song are pitch corrected to form humorous, YouTube Poop style final products.

Origin

On November 14th, 2014, Soundcloud user susboy uploaded "Never Gonna Hit Those Notes,"^[1] a pitch-corrected remix of Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up. There, the track has been played over 385,000 times and liked over 10,000 times (shown below).

Spread

On June 13th, 2015, YouTuber Nostalgic Vibes uploaded the track to YouTube, where it gained over 18 million views in over two years (shown below).

Some remixes appeared over the course of the following year. For example, on March 14th, 2016, YouTuber DirtyKermit uploaded a version of Frozen's "Let It Go" that gained over 667,000 views (shown below, left). On October 4th, 2016, YouTuber kolmad dad uploaded a version of "Take On Me" by A-ha with a similar edit to susboy's Rick Astley parody that gained over 3.8 million views (shown below, right). kolmad dad also remixed the "Take On Me" video with visual effects. Notably, for the video's thumbnail, kolmad dad chose an image of a girl in the video with her nose edited out of the image. This would become a staple visual for future "hit those notes" remixes.

This sparked a spike in remixes featuring different tracks. Popular edits include a mix of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You," posted by Lemonan and gaining 177,000 views (shown below, left) and a version of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" uploaded by Memeski that gained over 552,000 views (shown below, right).
