On October 24th, 2007, episode 55 of the Japanese video game television program GameCenter CX[1] was broadcast, which featured host Shinya Arino playing the side-scrolling platformer game The Quest of Ki.[2] On February 29th, 2012, a 4chan user posted a screen captured image from the episode with the caption "His smile and optimism: gone" (shown below).

On November 3rd, 2013, Imgur[4] user PaperWarrior uploaded an image of a Japanese man holding his head titled "His smile and optimism: gone"" (shown below, left). On February 23rd, 2015, Redditor Dawk19 posted a screenshot of a green text story on 4chan titled "His smile and optimism gone" to the /r/4chan[5] subreddit (shown below, right).
On February 24th, 2015, Twitter user @KapitanTripp[7] tweeted the expression. On April 2nd, FunnyJunk[6] user grimmwaters replied to a post with a picture of "Sad Keanu": along with the message "His smile and optimism: gone."
