#HillaryNewLogo is a satirical Twitter hashtag and a series of parody images poking fun at Hillary Clinton's custom-themed logos for the 2016 presidential election campaign that are conspicuously designed to celebrate the African-American culture. The Democratic presidential candidate's Twitter account initially drew criticism with the unveiling of the commemorative logo for Rosa Parks Day on December 1st, 2015, which only intensified after the introduction of another controversial logo designed in honor of Kwanzaa, a week-long celebration of African heritage in the United States and elsewhere.

Origin

Rosa Parks Day Tribute

On December 1st, 2015, the avatar image of Hillary Clinton's official Twitter account was updated with a custom-designed version of the original campaign logo featuring a cartoonified figure of Rosa Parks, the renowned African-American Civil Rights activist, sitting on an H-shaped bus seat (shown below, right).

While the custom avatar was intended to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Rosa Parks Day, the day on which the Alabama resident was arrested for refusing to obey the state's bus segregation laws, it was quickly met by backlash on the social media, particularly from Black Twitter, where it was perceived as insensitive cultural appropriation of the African-American heritage and Civil Rights Movement.

The social media backlash surrounding Hillary Clinton's logo tribute to Rosa Parks Day was picked up by a number of well-known news sites and blogs, including Daily Mail[1], Mashable[2] and The Daily Caller[9], among others.

Kwanzaa Tribute

Several weeks later, Hillary Clinton's Twitter account was updated with another custom-themed avatar, this time, featuring a Kwanzaa-inspired image of a kinara with seven candles (Mishumaa Saba) decorated in the tricolor themes of the Pan-African banner: red, black and green (shown below).

Upon its debut on December 26th, which coincided with the beginning of Kwanzaa, Clinton's seasonal tribute to the African-American holiday once again backfired and prompted backlash on Twitter under the hashtag #HillaryNewLogo[3], with many criticizing the logo as a conspicuous attempt at pandering votes from the black constituents.

Examples

In the following 24 hours, over a dozen of parody logo designs featuring various objects that are stereotypically associated with popular black culture emerged on Twitter.
