Hillary Clinton In An East Harlem Kitchen refers to a 2016 image of Hillary Clinton walking into a working-class kitchen in the East Harlem area of New York City, appearing to have a confused and concerned expression. The photo has been used as a reaction image and is primarily used with captions describing a rich person or character interacting with working-class and poor communities.

Origin

On April 15th, 2016, Twitter / X user @JoshRobin[1] posted an image of Hillary Clinton entering an East Harlem kitchen, gaining over 420 retweets and 780 likes in eight years (shown below). Clinton was visiting the apartment as part of a campaign stop in New York City.[2]


Spread

The picture instantly began spreading online. On April 15th, 2016, the same day it was posted on Twitter for the first time, it was posted to the subreddit /r/PhotoshopBattles[3] by Redditor LoneLegistlator, gaining over 10,000 points in eight years. There, some popular edits include a photoshop by Redditor czech_your_republic of Clinton standing behind Ben Carson, which gained over 3,200 points in eight years (shown below, left), and an edit by Redditor workingat7 that photoshopped Clinton as a cleaning lady, gaining over 6,800 points in the same timeframe (shown below, right).


The image also saw instant use as a reaction image on Twitter. Again on April 15th, 2016, Twitter user @adamjmoussa[4] posted the image with the caption, "when you walk into your grindr hook-up's apartment and wonder for a minute if this is where you'll die," gaining over 1,600 retweets and 4,000 likes in eight years (shown below, left).

The image continued seeing consistent use over the following eight years. For example, on January 15th, 2024, Twitter user DaFiretruck[5] posted the image with the caption, "Taylor Swift watching the drunkest humans she’s ever seen jumping through flaming tables in Buffalo next week," referring to the Kansas City Chiefs upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills, gaining over 5,900 retweets and 29,000 likes in three days (shown below, right).
