About

Hidden Blade is a spring-loaded retractable dagger used by members of the Assassin Order in the action video game series Assassin's Creed. Its unique mechanism and appearance inspired many fans of the series to create their own custom versions of the weapon, many of which have been shared on YouTube.

Origin

In the Assassin's Creed series, the hidden blade is the signature weapon used by the members of the Assassin Order, which can be used by the protagonist in executions during the games (shown below). The earliest version was featured in the first Assassin's Creed game released on November 13th, 2007.

Spread

On November 26th, 2007, YouTuber JeremySpyder Gallant uploaded footage of himself building a LEGO replica of the hidden blade weapon (shown below, left). On November 3rd, 2008, YouTuber I0LIKE0DIRT posted a video of his paper version of the hidden blade (shown below, right).

On December 13th, 2009, YouTuber MrScowt posted a video demonstrating how to building a metal hidden blade, which gained over 1.3 million views and 2,600 comments in the next six years (shown below, left). On November 1st, 2010, YouTuber Indy Mogul posted footage of his homemade spring-loaded hidden blade using a dull tent stake (shown below, right). Within five years, the video garnered more than 1.3 million views and 4,800 comments.

On November 23rd, 2011, the video game distribution platform Steam released a Team Fortress 2 update featuring a hidden blade-inspired melee weapon for the spy class called the "Sharp Dresser"[4] (shown below).

On September 20th, 2012, YouTuber zGuillotinez uploaded an unboxing of a hidden blade replica purchased from the video game retailer Gamestop, gathering upwards of 4.6 million views and 5,500 comments in three years (shown below, left). On October 21st, 2013, YouTuber show [2] Man At Arms uploaded a video titled "Hidden Blade & Pirate Cutlass (Assassin's Creed 4)," describing how the hidden blade has become one of their most requested weapon to make by the fans (shown below, right). In two years, the video gained over five million views and 35,000 comments.

On April 2nd, 2014, Urban Dictionary[1] user GrImReApEr submitted an entry on the hidden blade, describing it as "a hidden wrist blade that will deploy with the pull of a ring pulley system that causes the blade to extend and retract."

As of April 2015 on Deviantart,, there are over 16,000 results for the keyword "hidden blade," many of which feature replicas and fanarts of the weapon.[3]
