Hi! My Name Is Jason refers to a viral webcomic titled Remembering People's Names by artist The Jenkins where a man named Jason introduces himself to another man who instantly forgets his name, as his brain prioritizes a memory about the specific order of a deck of cards from 2012. The comic was posted online in May 2020 and became a viral exploitable format over the following years, with users replacing the text in the comic to reference specific fandoms and memories.
Origin
On May 6th, 2020, The Jenkins posted a comic titled "Remembering People’s Names" to his Wordpress[1] site, Instagram[2] and Reddit's /r/comics[3] forum, garnering over 1,300 likes on Instagram and 400 upvotes on Reddit in two years (shown below). The webcomic is about the frustration of memory prioritizing unimportant things.
On May 6th, a Redditor posted an edit of the comic to /r/AsbestosRemovalMemes[4] about asbestos knowledge taking precedence over Jason's name, garnering over 2,900 upvotes in two years (shown below). This is the earliest known meme using the comic. On May 8th, a Redditor posted a template for the meme to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial.[5]
Spread
The comic was edited and posted to numerous Instagram[6][7] pages in May 2020, mostly by company or brand Instagram pages catering to their niche fanbases, including ultimate frisbee page discmemes on May 12th, 2020 and Borderlands page civillands on May 14th. On June 11th, Instagram[8] page theofficealways posted a meme about The Office using the format, garnering over 8,000 likes in two years. On October 8th, a version of the meme was posted to /r/prequelmemes,[9] garnering over 1,400 upvotes in two years (shown below).
On September 29th, 2021, Instagram[10] user some_memes_my_dude posted a version of the meme about cheese, garnering over 19,800 likes in a year (shown below, left). The meme was reposted to Instagram[11] on October 15th, garnering over 30,000 likes in a similar span of time. An anti-meme version was also posted to /r/memes[12] on October 26th, garnering over 10,000 upvotes in a year (shown below, right).
