About

Hey Wake Up, I Died refers to a trend and series of TikToks in which a person will post a video of themselves with a caption detailing a way they nearly died in their lives as though they're posting from an alternate universe. The TikTok trend is typically accompanied by the song "Old Doll" from the video game Mad Father.

Origin

It's unclear when the trend started, but it appears to have begun towards the beginning of October 2024. An early example posted in Russian was posted on October 3rd, 2024 by @vikysya34_3,[1] who wrote, "Bro, wake up, I died 4 years ago, they didn't have time to pull me out of the water" (translated).

Spread

Over the following several days, the trend reached English-speaking TikTokers, who joined in with their own stories about their near-death experiences. For example, on October 5th, 2024 user @yassified_taxi[2] posted an example that gained over 155,000 likes in three weeks.

On October 6th, TikTok user @hearts4.blu[3] posted an example that gained over 850,000 likes in roughly three weeks.

The trend was not embraced by everyone on the platform. On October 10th, 2024, TikTok user @therealblizzy[4] suggested the trend could bring about bad karma, gaining over 560,000 likes in two weeks.
