Hey So Um There's This Girl refers to a four-panel exploitable template in which the first three panels show a character going through various faces as it says "Hey so um there's this girl and um…" with the fourth panel showing a humorous and/or creepy smile. The format is similar to memes like Hey Girls, Did You Know and The Girl Reading This.
Origin
The earliest known edit featuring the phrase featured a 3D model of Luigi. It appeared on Twitter [6] on December 28th, 2017. The tweet received more than 2,000 likes and 700 retweets in less than two years (shown below).
Spread
It later appeared on Amino Apps[1] on January 8th, 2018 and on Facebook page Zesty Supreme[2] on February 3rd (shown below).
On June 18th, 2018, the quote was used again in a template submitted to ShitpostBot 5000 [3] (shown below, left). On the 23rd, a variation was posted to /r/comedyheaven by user chasepetersen18, gaining over 7,000 points (shown below, right).
The format continued spreading through Reddit over the summer. There were several popular edits of the emoji template[4][5] as well as numerous edits using different characters. For example, a post by DesHis to /r/ToiletPaperUSA used Charlie Kirk, gaining over 470 likes (shown below, left) and a post by LazyThePotato to /r/fivenightsatfreddys gained over 370 points (shown below, right).
