"Hey, I've Seen This One!" refers to a memorable scene from 1985 film Back to the Future in which main protagonist Marty McFly recognizes a premiering episode of The Honeymooners previously seen by him in the future. A GIF and a still image of the scene paired with the quote have been circulated online, usually in reference to modern day developments reminiscent of historical events and as a reaction to reposted content.

Origin

On July 3rd, 1985, science fiction action comedy Back to the Future premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the movie, main protagonist Marty McFly, who arrives to year 1955 from 1985, watches a premiering episode of The Honeymooners TV series and comments that he has seen it before.

On March 12th, 2013, Tumblr user awkwardelevatorinc submitted a series of GIFs from Back to the Future in a humorous post about Carl! scene from The Walking Dead TV series.[2] The post gained over 31,700 likes and reblogs in six years.

In the following years, the GIF of Marty McFly saying "Hey, I've seen this one!" was used as a reaction to reposted content. [3][4]

On November 26th, 2018, an unknown Redditor posted a meme based on the GIF to /r/dankmemes subreddit,[5] where it gained over 47,500 upvotes in five months. On the same day, the image was reposted by Occupy Democrats Logic Facebook group, gaining over 5,200 likes in the same period.[6]

In the following months, the image macro appeared in multiple notable posts on Reddit,[7] Instagram,[8] iFunny[9] and other platforms, often used as a reference to modern day developments repeating historic events.
