Hey Everyone, Look at This Drawing of My Own Original Character That I Put Hours Of Time and Effort Into is a webcomic by BluebottleFlyer where a character tries to show a crowd of people representing Twitter users his original character but they don't care because they're too enamored with perceived "lower effort" trends and art trends on Twitter, including memes, fanart, NSFW art and gossip, resulting in the character tearing up his original character and walking away. The comic was posted in November 2022 and inspired some criticism toward the artist for prioritizing likes and attention on his art over making the art itself, causing him to take a break from the platform. The comic also inspired photoshops and redraws, as well as becoming an exploitable meme format.

Origin

On November 1st, 2022, Twitter^[1] user and cartoonist @bluebottleflyer posted a "vent comic," meaning a comic used to vent about a problem or frustration, about their original, high-effort art and creations getting less attention on Twitter than "lower effort" content like memes, gossip, trends, NSFW art, etc. (shown below). The post gained over 19,500 likes, 2,200 retweets and 5,100 quote retweets in a week.

Criticism

While many Twitter artists agreed with the message of @bluebottleflyer's comic and shared similar frustrations, some saw the comic as @bluebottleflyer prioritizing fame, likes and attention over creating art because they enjoy it. On the day it was posted, Twitter^[2] user @PierreAndAndre commented, "I know the feeling. I only get the same five to ten likes each time and get very little interest and support with my work. But I appreciate whatever I get and continue on no matter what." Twitter^[3] user @Tenrione commented, "Bruh then get better, if you give up just because you didn't had enough likes then you never wanted to be an artist." Twitter^[4] user @TheElectric_Fox commented, " Fame can be a good thing, but if you strive for fame only, you'll only lead into a downward spiral for you and your art. Draw what YOU want to draw, what makes you happy." NSFW artists criticized the artist for suggesting NSFW art is lower effort than other art. Some people also made photoshops of the comic and memes criticizing the artist and his art style (examples shown below).

On November 2nd, @bluebottleflyer posted to Twitter,^[5] "Taking a break from here for a while," assumedly due to the criticism. The artist's announcement inspired support from some, who saw the criticism towards him as too harsh and unfair. On November 3rd, Twitter^[6] user @Yiszy1 posted an edit of the comic about uplifting small artists, garnering over 24,000 likes in a week (shown below, left). On November 4th, Twitter^[7] user @piratecashoo posted drawings of @bluebottleflyer's OCs in support of the artist, garnering over 570 likes in six days (shown below, right). Some users continued to criticize the artist, painting it as ironic how he left Twitter after posting a popular webcomic.

Spread

The comic inspired numerous redraws and photoshops over the following days, largely through quote-retweets and comments on the original post. While some of the edits are made to criticize the artist and the comic's original sentiment, others are simple remakes or ironic takes and shitposts using the comic. On November 3rd, 2022, Twitter^[8] user @GENC____ quote-retweeted the comic with a redraw of it, writing, "draw this in your style!" garnering over 13,000 likes and 120 quote retweets in a week. On the same day, Twitter^[9] user @_rawrell posted an edit of the comic with the artist as Hitler being rejected from art school, garnering over 2,500 likes in a week (shown below, left). That same day, Newgrounds^[10] user GENCER posted a redraw of the meme drawing the artist as Leonardo DaVinci, garnering over 50 faves and 400 views in a week (shown below, right).

On November 5th, Twitter^[11] artist @Cheekie_ quote retweeted the original post with a new version of the comic, writing, "I can relate to the original comic because I have been drawing jacked girls for a while but muscle is a niche fetish… so a lot of people didn't like my art," garnering over 11,000 likes in five days (shown below).
