About
Hexafusion, also known as Triple Fusion and /co/ Fusion, refers to the fan art practice of creating a composite character by combining the physical features of three fictional characters from different universes, which is typically visualized in a hexagonal schematic detailing each component of the fusion process.
Origin
On November 20th, 2013, a fusion of the character Wendy from the animated TV series "Gravity Falls" and Frankie from the animated TV series "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends" called "Wanky"[1] was posted on 4chan's /co/ (Comics & Cartoons) board (shown below, left). Shortly after, a chart was created featuring both characters with the addition of the character Vicky from the animated TV series "Fairly Oddparents" (shown below, right).
Precursor
The concept of creating a hybrid character has been illustrated through Pokemon fan art (Pokefusion) since as early as November 2008 with a contest hosted by the Kongregate[3] message board to see who could create the best fused sprite out of several Pokemon creatures in canon. The winning submission (shown below) incorporated various features from Infernape, Giratina, Metang, Articuno and Alakazam.
Spread
On November 22nd, 2013, the same chart was posted by Tumblr[2] user plagueofgripes, gaining over 280 notes within the first month. Over time, numerous amount of such fusions have appeared. An image booru titled "co-fusions" was created as an archive for examples from the series.[3] On December 20th, DeviantArtist[4] ValorNomad submitted co-fusion of Tifa Lockheart from the 1997 role-playing game Final Fantasy VII, the Pokemon Gardevoir and Twilight Sparkle from the animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (shown below).
