About

Hello, Peter or Hola, Peter is a line of dialogue spoken by the villain Dr. Octopus at the end of the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, released in August 2021. The line and appearance of Doc Ock, played by Alfred Molina, inspired excitement online as it confirmed rumors about actors from Sony's Spider-Man films reprising their roles in the upcoming Disney movie. The scene inspired numerous memes following the trailer's release, including image macros, video edits and photoshops.

Origin

On August 23rd, 2021, the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home was released, gaining over 14 million views in two days. The trailer came after months of rumors about cast members from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films reprising their roles in the new Disney Spider-Man film, crossing over both universes. The end of the trailer confirms this to a degree as Dr. Octopus, played by Alfred Molina as in 2004's Spider-Man 2 comes out of the smoke to confront Tom Hollands' Spider-Man, saying, "Hello, Peter" (shown below). The trailer also hints at the appearances of past villains The Lizard, Green Goblin, Sandman and Electro.

Spread

The scene inspired numerous memes across social media in multiple languages, many using a screenshot of Doc Ock's reveal subtitled "Hello, Peter."

On August 24th, 2021, 9GAG[1] user spacelord13 posted an image macro using the scene, gaining over 8,300 upvotes in a day (shown below, left). On the same day, Instagram[2] user @drgrayfang posted a meme using the Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier and Jon Anik UFC #248 Reaction on the screenshot, gaining over 60,000 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).

The trailer also inspired people to photoshop characters from other media properties as Molina's Doc Ock. For example, on 24th, Facebook[3][4] pages Star Wars Universe and Usada Pekoraposting posted photoshops adding the circular glasses and subtitle "hello Peter" to images of young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Usada Pekora, gaining over 1,100 shares and 3,300 reactions on the former and 4,800 reactions and 780 shares on the latter in a day (shown below, left and right respectively).

The clip inspired speculation over which Peter Parker Dr. Octopus could be talking about, as viewers assumed Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man interpretations will also appear in the film due to the presence of the villains. On August 24th, Instagram[5] user @the_engineer_bro posted a pointing Spider-Man meme referencing this, gaining over 18,000 likes in a day (shown below).
