Heartbreak Anniversary Dance is a dance set to the 2020 song "Heartbreak Anniversary" by Giveon, defined by smooth gyrations of the body and lots of arm movements. The song became popular on TikTok in February 2021 where the dance was started, popularized largely by TikToker Whamos Cruz.

Origin

On February 10th, 2021, TikToker[1] @marcdanielbernardo posted a video in which he dances, mostly by turning his body side-to-side moving his arms around his body, to Giveon's "Heartbreak Anniversary,"[6] a soulful love song, for his partner, who stares at him the whole time (shown below). The video gained over 36 million views in two months.

Over the course of the month the video inspired a dance trend, with many TikToker performing the same dance, often alongside or for their partners (examples shown below, left and right). In two months, the original sound had been used in over 4.3 million videos on the platform.

Whamos Cruz

On February 24th, 2021, TikToker[2] Whamos Cruz uploaded a video in which he performs the dance while wearing a dress, surrounded by four men in police outfits, as if trying to court them (shown below). The video gained over 58.1 million views in just under two months. On February 26th, YouTuber[3] Tikotoko Video posted the video, garnering over 500,000 views in a comparable span of time.

On March 1st and 3rd, Cruz released two more versions of the dance to TikTok[4][5] the first very similar to the original video, and the second with Cruz out of drag and surrounded by women (shown below, left and right). The videos gained over 88.1 million and 59.4 million views respectively in a month.

Cruz's video inspired a new branch of the trend in which TikTokers perform the dance while surrounded by people watching them throughout March, sometimes while wearing drag (examples shown below, left and right).
