He Was in the Amazon With My Mom When She Was Researching Spiders Right Before She Died refers to a quote turned copypasta from the Madame Web trailer which went viral on Twitter / X in November 2023. The Spider-Man spin-off movie, starring Dakota Johnson as Madame Web and Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter (aka Spider-Woman), gained memes and reactions on Twitter on the day of its release, centering on the "He was in the Amazon…" line due to the perception that the delivery was forced and cringy as evident in the memes that mocked it. The man referenced in the line was Ezekiel Sims, played by actor Tahar Rahim.

Origin

On November 15th, 2023, the official X[1] account of @MadameWeb posted the film's first trailer, gaining over 7.3 million views and 20,000 likes in one day.

The trailer was also uploaded to YouTube[2] by the channel Sony Pictures Entertainment, receiving roughly 6.9 million views and 69,000 likes in a day. At the video's 1:45-minute mark, actress Dakota Johnson, as Madame Web, delivers a line about the character Ezekiel Sims, saying, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died" (shown below).

The first viral post to reference and ridicule the line was uploaded by X[3] user @TChalla_1966 at around 9 a.m. EST on November 15th, 2023, who wrote, "'He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died' Such an unserious movie," receiving roughly 1,600 likes in a day (shown below).

Soon after the aforementioned post, various viral posts about the "He was in the Amazon…" line surfaced on X. For instance, on November 15th, 2023, X[4] user @alex_abads posted the clip with the copypasta as the caption, earning roughly 13,000 likes in a day (shown below).

Also on November 15th, 2023, X[5] user @alex_abads used the copypasta to caption a still from The Real House Wives of Beverly Hills, gaining over 2,300 likes in a day (shown below, left). Later on November 15th, X[5] user @realJaredGilman posted a Vince McMahon Reaction meme about the line, gaining over 8,800 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Viral posts persisted on X[6] on the date of. During the same timeframe, memes about the line surfaced on Reddit, evident in a post shared by Redditor werealwayswithyou to /r/moviescirclejerk[7] on November 15th, 2023, which showed The Shining character Wendy Torrance (Shelley Duvall) reading the line repeated on a typewriter, gaining over 520 upvotes in one day (shown below).
