He Thought School Was For One Day Only! He MAD!! is an exploitable image of a little Black boy who's upset about going to school after the first day. The original post was uploaded on Facebook in mid-2015 and spread to Instagram, 9GAG and Tumblr shortly after. In mid-2021, the catchphrase was used to caption different image macros of memetic characters. Later on, creators then photoshopped the boy into different settings, similar to the I Shouda Never Smoke That Shit meme. This predominantly happened on iFunny and Instagram in 2022.

Origin

In August 2015, Facebook user NaTasha Michelle (since-deleted) posted a photo of her son in a classroom. In the photo, he's looking up at the camera and obviously upset about the circumstance. She wrote in the caption, "He thought school was for a day only !!!Rotfl!!! #HebigMAD" (shown below).

The original Facebook post has not been found because NaTasha Michelle is not discoverable on Facebook. The earliest known posting of the full screenshot was uploaded on August 25th, 2015, to Tumblr^[1] by the blog 56blogscrazy, earning roughly 187,000 notes in seven years. However, two days prior, on August 23rd, 2015, the Instagram^[2] page of 9GAG posted just the image of the angry boy with the caption, "He thought school was for a day only," and received roughly 609,800 likes in seven years.

Spread

On August 10th, 2017, Instagram^[3] user spray posted a different iteration of the same meme, instead writing in the caption, "He thought school was for one day only! He MAD!!" and earning roughly 28,300 likes in five years (shown below). This is the first known posting of this version of the meme.

Viral reposts of the aforementioned iteration surfaced again on Instagram^[4] in late August 2021. Inspired by these, on August 30th, 2021, the Instagram^[5] page capybaraappreciationaccount inserted a Capybara into a moldy version of the meme, earning roughly 12,400 likes in one year (shown below, left). The trend spread to iFunny in the next month. On September 12th, 2021, iFunnyer^[6] ImInUrCloset uploaded an iteration, earning roughly 11,000 smiles in 11 months (shown below, right).

The moldy template accumulated usage on Instagram^[7] going into the remainder of 2021. In early 2022, the "He thought school was for one day only! He MAD!!" catchphrase started to be recaptioned and the original little boy was photoshopped into different settings, similar to the I Shoulda Never Smoke That Shit meme.

The first to recaption the catchphrase was iFunnyer^[8] Aegidivs on October 31st, 2021, replacing the words to read, "He thought EXISTENCE was for one LIFE only! He MAD!!" Over the course of 10 months, the meme received over 520 smiles (shown below).

On July 22nd, 2022, Instagram^[9] user owen_kung posted a version that photoshopped the little boy into Samsara, captioning it, "He thought the cycle of death and rebirth was for one lifetime only! He MAD!!" The post received roughly 26,900 likes (shown below, left). On August 22nd, 2022, Twitter^[10] user jaketropolis photoshopped the boy into ancient Rome, captioning it, "He Thought Building Rome Would Only Take One Day! He MAD!" and receiving roughly 30,900 likes in one day (shown below, right).
