He Screams For He Does Not Know revers to a widely parodied comic by Cyanide and Happiness in which a gingerbread man living in a gingerbread house has an existential crisis considering the question "is the house made of flesh, or is he made of house?" The comic has been parodied by social media users who use its punchline in similar situations where an object is inside another object made of the same material.

Origin

On December 20th, 2015, Cyanide and Happiness^[1] posted a webcomic showing a gingerbread man and a gingerbread house having an existential crisis considering the question, "Is the house made of flesh, or is he made of house?", ending with the line "He screams for he does not know" (shown below).

Spread

On December 22nd, 2015, Facebook page Garlic Bread Memes^[2] posted a variation of the original comic which changed "gingerbread" to "garlic bread," gaining over 1,400 reactions (shown below, left). However, the comic itself didn't begin seeing widespread parody until 2017. That year, some of the first parodies began being posted online. On February 14th, 2017, Redditor Son_Of_Pixonator^[3] posted a parody of the comic featuring the Pokémon Regice in /r/gaming, gaining over 17,000 points (shown below, right).

Other popular examples include a Paper Mario version uploaded by papermariosuggestion ^[4] to Tumblr and re-uploaded to Reddit gaining over 65,000 points (shown below, left). On October 30th, 2018, Twitter user @andii1917^[5] made the joke with a pumpkin carved into a pumpkin, gaining over 92,000 retweets and 314,000 likes (shown below, right).

On July 5th, 2019, the joke was revived when Twitter user @fancywookiee^[6] posted a picture of a Croc with human legs and arms, adding a variation on the comic's text as the caption (shown below). The tweet gained over 35,000 retweets and 137,000 likes, and inspired a Twitter Moment.^[7]
