About
He Did It Again, Huh? refers to a catchphrase most commonly associated with an image macro of Toy Story character Jesse resting her head on Buzz Lightyear's shoulder, which became a prominent meme about "side pieces." Circulated since 2016, the image macro has been used as a reaction and a recaption meme format.
Origin
On June 18th, 2010, the animated Pixar film Toy Story 3 premiered.[1] In one scene of the film, Andy's toys find themselves at a landfill being pushed towards an incinerator. Seemingly in acceptance of their fate, the toys hold each other's hands, with cowgirl Jesse closing her eyes and placing her head onto Buzz Lightyear's shoulder, who also leans onto her (seen below, 2:22 mark).
The still image of the characters (shown below) appeared in various blogs[2][3] in the following years (shown below, left).
Prior to October 12th, 2016, an image macro captioned "Side niggas be like "He did it again huh?," a version of the X Niggas Be Like meme format, was created by an unknown user. The earliest instance of the image, originally posted to Instagram, was scrapped by the image search website TinEye[4] and is dated October 12th, 2016 (reposted version of the image shown below, right).
Spread
The catchphrase, image macro and an image caption version of the same meme saw viral spread online starting in 2019. For example, on July 9th, 2019, Instagram[5] user yourfrienddoge posted a Swole Doge meme that received over 4,600 likes in five years (shown below, left).
On August 12th, Tumblr[6] user wet-monsoon posted a caption meme based on a cropped version of the image macro, with the top caption removed from it. The post (shown below, right) gained over 35,000 likes and reblogs in five years.
The cropped version of the image macro saw more use online as a caption format in the following years, while the full version has been recaptioned. For example, on March 24th, 2023, X[7] user @OvOBrezzzy posted a caption meme that garnered over 1,500 reposts and 25,000 likes in one year (shown below, left).
On December 21st, tweleb Corn posted a recaptioned meme that gained over 2,500 reposts and 55,000 likes on X[8] in five months (shown below, right).
