About
Having Roommates In X Be Like refers to an exploitable image macro and phrasal template where meme creators replace the words in the original phrase to make fun of their current living situation, location and roommates. The original image that created the template was posted to Facebook in October 2020 but began circulating as an exploitable in September 2021 across Twitter and Instagram.
Origin
In May 2018, the now-deleted Facebook page Booka Memes uploaded a meme (shown below, left) using an image of a woman standing in an apartment doorway. The image had been used in memes before, most notably on Twitter[1] in November 2016. However, Booka Memes first used the image in May 2018, putting the image in conversation with the woman wanting "a bump." The meme was reposted to the subreddit /r/drugmemes[2] on May 6th, 2018, and received roughly 105 upvotes over the course of three years.
In October 2020, Booka Memes used the image of the woman standing in the doorway again, still putting her in conversation with wanting "a bump." The meme (shown below) commented on what living in the "SouthSide Trap" is like. Again, the Booka Memes Facebook page has since been deleted, however, their Instagram[3] page still exists. Regardless, the image was reposted soon after on Facebook[4] by user Andrew Mob, who reposted it on October 3rd, 2020, and received roughly 73 reactions over the course of one year.
Nearly a year later on September 19th, 2021, Facebook[5] user Candace Shaw replaced the top text of Booka Memes' image with, "Having roommates in Florida be like." Her meme (shown below) received roughly 136 reactions over the course of 10 days.
Spread
On September 21st, 2021, Candace Shaw's meme spread to Twitter,[6] reposted by Twitter user @purrsace. Her tweet received roughly 158 likes over the course of one week. Instagram meme page @pataisfantasyworld was the first to edit the meme and make it an exploitable. On September 22nd, 2021, they posted a re-edited version (shown below), replacing "Florida" with "Bushwick." Their post[7] received roughly 46,000 likes over the course of five days.
In the days following, the template was used by multiple Instagram meme pages, replacing various words in the image as well as who is standing in the doorway. For example, Instagram[8] meme page @this.and.a.blunt replaced the name "Brittany" with "Sock" and replaced the word "dishes" with "nothing" in a version of that they posted on September 22nd, 2021, which received roughly 3,700 likes over the course of five days.
