About
Gym Owners On January 1st refers to an Exploitable phrase detailing how Gym owners feel and act on January 1st after people sign up for the gym as part of New Year's Resolutions. These memes show gym owners as being incredibly wealthy and swimming in cash as soon as January 1st hits, with a few memes depicting the same gym owner as destitute during the month of December.
Origin
Memes about New Years Resolutions have been colloquially used online for years, but on December 31st, 2019, the Redditor u/FunnyValentineMP4[1] uploaded a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure meme featuring Yoshikage Kira both as a normal business man and then again as a gym owner on January 1st, with lots of cash flying around him (shown below).
Spread
This meme phrase would quickly take hold, with other meme creators using it in similar contexts but using different rich characters. A day later, on January 1st, 2020, the Redditor u/hammysyrian[2] uploaded a meme of Mr. Krabs from Spongebob Squarepants laying on a pile of money, captioning the image as 'the Gym on January 1st' to the Subreddit r/memes (shown below).
The memes about gym owners being rich on January 1st continued to spike in usage whenever it was close to January 1st, with the YouTuber @GigaCatMemes[3] posting a YouTube short of the Colorado Aggies coach saying it was time to bring him his money, with the caption explicitly calling it out as 'gym owners on January 1st' on December 30th, 2023 (shown below).
