About
Gyat, also written GYATT, GYAT or GYAAATT, is a slang term used on Twitch and TikTok that means "goddamn" in short form and is also used to refer to a person's posterior. It's typically said fast and aggressively, most often when an attractive woman or man passes by with a large butt. Although it's been used on Twitter since the late 2000s, it didn't become notable in memes until mid-2021, mostly due to Twitch streamers like YourRage and Kai Cenat. It became notable alongside other slang terms like Unspoken Rizz.
History
The phrase "gyat damn" was used on Twitter[1] as early as January 2009. On January 18th, 2012, hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj used it in a tweet[2] that earned over 323 likes (shown below, left). On July 7th, 2015, Twitter[3] user majestymario used it in a quote retweet that received roughly 1,000 likes in seven years (shown below, left). In a reply[4] to the aforementioned QT, Nicki Minaj is mentioned, alluding to her being the likely origin for the abbreviation's early popularization.
On May 31st, 2018, the band The 1975 released their album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships which included the song "Give Yourself a Try." [5] "GYAT" then became associated with an abbreviation for the song among fans of the band, as seen in tweets[6][7] from 2019 and 2020.
YourRage Saying "GYATT"
On May 27th, 2021, "GYAT" was used in a tweet[12] that received over 140 likes in one year. On July 5th, 2022, it was used in a quote retweet[8] to caption an image of a man with a comically large butt, earning over 400 likes in one year. Both these tweets allude to a growing prevalence started by Twitch streamer YourRage. In June 2021, YourRage began screaming "GYATT" whenever he saw an attractive woman's butt, subsequently pausing the video and letting the chat spam "GYATT."
On September 5th, 2021, the YouTube channel Yourshaderoom Live posted a compilation video of YourRage's GYATT Moments, spanning from June through August 2021. Over the course of eight months, the video received roughly 5,400 views (shown below).
Going into the remainder of 2021, GYATT was used more frequently by internet users across platforms. For instance, on July 11th, 2021, Twitter[9] user imdavisss tweeted, "Why do people say GYAT when I walk on peoples stream?" earning roughly 3,300 likes in ten months (shown below, left). Additionally, more moments of YourRage screaming "GYATT" were posted to YouTube. For instance, on November 24th, 2021, the YouTube channel Yourshaderoom Live posted a screen recording of YourRage overseeing a double date that Kai Cenat and iShowSpeed were on, wherein, he unleased the "loudest GYATT ever" (shown below, right).
GYATT on TikTok
In early 2022, GYATT was used frequently by TikTokers within the text overlay and captions of their videos. For instance, on February 19th, 2022, TikToker[10] wplug03 reposted a YourRage stream, earning roughly 4,500 plays in three months (shown below, left). On April 12th, 2022, TikToker[11] icantfindmypepe posted a video about people not knowing who popularized the term, earning roughly 36,500 plays and 5,900 likes in one month (shown below, right).
