About

Guy Looking At Server is a reaction image and image macro of a man with his hands on his hips looking confusedly at the inside of a server rack. It is most often posted as a reaction to show when a person is doing a job they don't know how to do. The meme tends to circulate whenever a major website, game or platform goes offline due to a crash or service outage, with the man identified as the tech support working to get the site back online for humorous effect.

Origin

The man is Chase Holt, and the image (seen below) was first posted to his profile on May 28th, 2021.[1] According to that post and others following, Holt had secured a job via Indeed.com working with computers and servers despite holding no qualifications whatsoever. The photo, from his second day at work, was part of a series documenting his professional journey. Holt seems to have worked the job at the server place for at least a few weeks, but now appears to work elsewhere.

The image of the Facebook post Holt made, which featured the photo of him looking at the server, was posted to iFunny (seen below) on May 30th, 2021, receiving 34 likes and 6 comments in a year.[2]

The image was later posted (seen below) on June 5th, 2021 by Twitter Gaming, receiving over 2,500 likes over the course of a year.[3]

As documented on Holt's Facebook page, the meme was at first used as a reaction image, to represent whenever a person was doing a job they didn't know how to do. Holt reposted one on June 6th, 2021 (seen below) which received 43 likes on his Facebook page.[5]

On October 4th, 2021, a large outage involving Facebook led to many posts featuring Holt in his signature stance. One post (seen below) by @ven0ph from October 4th received almost 73,000 likes over the course of a year.[4]

Holt considered selling merchandise related to the meme in an October 7th, 2021 post (seen below) which received 132 likes and featured this possible t-shirt of him in front of the server. He also shared on his page about how people recognized him from the meme and asked him to do his "stance."[6]

The meme has continued to appear whenever a major outage happens at a website. On July 12th, 2022, following a Snapchat outage, Twitter user @jhocxt posted the image in response, receiving over 1,100 likes within five hours.[7]
