Gunnery Sgt. Hartman is a fictional Marine Corps drill instructional played by actor R. Lee Ermey in the 1987 Stanley Kubrick war film Full Metal Jacket. Online, the character's iconic scenes in the film have spawned numerous remix and parody videos.
Origin
Sgt. Hartman originally appeared in the 1987 war film Full Metal Jacket, which begins by following the experiences of a U.S. Marines platoon in boot camp under instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, who verbally abuses the soldiers as part of their training (shown below).[1]
Spread
On May 28th, 2011, YouTuber Frank Prankman uploaded recordings of prank calls made with a Hartman soundboard (shown below, left). On August 29th, 2013, YouTuber jayuzumi uploaded footage of himself using a Hartman soundboard in the game Battlefield 3 (shown below, right).
On August 7th, 2015, YouTuber FrostForUs uploaded Gunnery Sgt. Hartman's opening scene from the film, which gained over 11.6 million views and 11,800 comments over the next three years. On February 21st, 2016, YouTuber sonic7emerald uploaded a Hitler reacts parody dubbed with clips of Hartman (shown below, right).
Death
On April 15th, 2018, Ermey died when he was 74-year-old from complications caused by pneumonia. That day, posts about his death reached the front page of /r/news,[2] /r/television,[3] /r/movies[4] and /r/videos.[5] Also on April 15th, YouTuber Matsimus uploaded a tribute to Ermey, featuring a montage of video clips (shown below).
