About
GRWM is a slang term and acronym for Get Ready With Me that refers to a genre of vlog-style videos in which users show themselves doing their hair and makeup or dressing in an outfit, sometimes while talking with their viewers. GRWM videos first became popularized on YouTube in 2011, becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the 2010s and 2020s on video-sharing sites like TikTok. The genre sometimes crosses over with makeup tutorials.
Origin
The earliest apparent "get ready with me" video on YouTube was uploaded by YouTuber[1] Shaaanxo on January 14th, 2011, and features the YouTuber putting on her makeup over music, showing off every product before she applies it (shown below). The video gained over 32,000 views in 11 years.
Shaaanxo helped popularize the genre over the following months with further GRWM uploads. For example, on March 18th, she uploaded a GRWM video to YouTube[2] where she gets ready to go to the club, gaining over 489,000 views in 11 years (shown below).
Spread
The genre continued to spread throughout the 2010s. On March 10th, 2016, YouTuber[3] SaraBeautyCorner posted a comedy skit parodying GRWM videos, gaining over 74 million views in six years (shown below, left). On May 30th, YouTuber[4] JoJo Siwa posted a GRWM video, gaining over 22.7 million views in six years (shown below, right).
Kylie Jenner has posted several "drunk get ready with me" videos to her YouTube channel, where she gets ready with other members of the Jenner/Kardashian family while drunk. For example, on August 8th, 2019 she uploaded one of these videos to YouTube[5] with Khloe Kardashian, gaining over 24 million views in three years (shown below).
Get ready with me videos became increasingly popular on TikTok[6][7] throughout the 2020s, helping popularize the acronym and hashtag "#GRWM" (popular examples shown below). The videos are similar to those on YouTube although with faster cuts, many focusing on outfits rather than makeup.
