About

Grinch TikTok is a TikTok movement that happens every year leading up to December, where users share videos of themselves wearing Grinch cosplay and dancing, following TikTok trends, and acting out skits. Many users deliberately oversexualize their versions of the Grinch as an ironic thirst trap. The community is collected largely under the hashtags #grinchtok, #thegrinch, and #grinchtiktok.

Origin

It is unknown who started the Grinch TikTok movement. Grinch themed videos pop up on TikTok every year leading up to December, with examples as far back as 2018 available (shown below, left and right). The hashtags associated specifically with the movement (#GrinchTok, #GrinchTikTok) were only widely established in 2020, likely because Grinch videos have become an expected tradition on the platform.

On August 6th, 2020, TikToker thegrinchtiktoks[1] uploaded their first video, featuring themselves dancing in Grinch cosplay under the on-screen caption, "This is your welcome to Grinch TikTok" (shown below, left). The video garnered over 29 thousand views in 2 months, and signified an early beginning to 2020's Grinch videos, as well as establishing the hashtag #grinchtiktok. On the same day, thegrinchtiktoks uploaded a duet dancing with TikToker oncelertiktok, garnering over 2.9 million views in the same span of time (shown below, right).

Spread

Thegrinchtiktoks continued to upload videos as the grinch under the associated tags throughout August and September, inspiring more TikTokers to make Grinch videos. On September 22nd, TikToker mojo.babe[2] uploaded a video featuring herself as the Grinch in a bra and short-shorts, grinding on a fire hydrant (shown below, left). The video garnered over 975 thousand views in under a month. On September 30th, mojo.babe had another hit in her Grinch cosplay, with a video garnering over 5.8 million views in 16 days (shown below, right).

On October 13th, TikToker rex_uranus[3] uploaded a video featuring an oversexualized Grinch thirst trap, garnering over 127 thousand views in 3 days (shown below).

On October 15th, StayHipp[4] published an article detailing Grinch TikTok. As of October 16th, videos under the hashtags #grinchtiktok and #grinchtok have reached over 12.7-million and 3.5-million views respectively.
